Time Travel to Some Scottish Castles
67Some famous Scottish Castles seen first in an early photochrom dated around 1890-1900 and then in a more recent photo. Photochromes were colorized photographic negatives then they were then printed to have what looked like a coloured photo. Photochromes were reallypopular at the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, they were frequently used to make postcards and souvenirs
Caerlaverock Castle
This triangular castle was built in the 13th century, it is surrounded by a large moat. Initially it belonged to the Maxwell family, now it is a major tourist attraction and is often used for weddings and events. It is found in the southwest of Scotland near Dumfries. Parts of the castles were damaged in 1640 during a battle between Catholics and Protestants and were not rebuilt again
Balmoral Castle
Balmoral is a fairly new castle, it was completed in the 1850s although it was built of the site of an older castle. Soon after it was bought by Queen Victoria and has been one of the official residences of the British Royal Family. The Queen regularly stays at Balmoral for her summer holidays. Balmoral Castle is located in Aberdeenshire.
Kilchurn Castle
The ruins of a 15th century castle found on the shore of Loch Awe in Argyll and Bute. It was built around 1450 as a fortified home for the Campbells. Later on it was turned into barracks and was large enough to host about 200 troops. In 1760 the castle was hit by a lightning and badly damaged. It has been left in that state for over 250 years.
Threave Castle
A castle that was built in the 14the century after the destruction of the previous castle that was destroyed during a battle, this building was then bediseged and partially destroyed in 1640. What is still standing of Threave Casle is found on an island in the river Dee.
Culzean Castle
This castle is famous for being on the back of the five pound note issued by the Bank of Scotland. It is found on top of a cliff in Ayrshire and it is now open to the public, it is also used as an hotel and for wedding receptions. It is relatively modern compared to most Scottish castles as it was built at the end of the 18th century.
Castle Campbell
This castle was build for the clan Stuart but then moved to the Campbells. It was built in the 15the century on a hill above the town of Dollar, not too far from Glasgow.
Stirling Castle
One of the most important castle in Scotland as many kings and queens were crowned here. It is also one of the largest Scottish castles. The castle is situated on top of a large hill and is now open to the public. Its visitors will have access to a museum and the historical Royal Lodgings.
Doune Castle
A castle here was first built in the 13th century but was later destroyed, the existing castle was built in the 14th century. It was later used by the Scottish Royal family as a hunting lodge. It was involved in several battles and by the 18th century was nearly all destroyed. By the end of that century it was actually restored. It is located only 8 miles from Stirling.
